Teaching
Courses I teach or have taught at Illinois Tech.
Introduction to Biomedical Engineering
Introduces the scope of the biomedical engineering profession and its role in society, and develops a sense of professionalism. Provides an overview of biomedical engineering through lectures, outside speakers, hands-on exercises and analysis of the scientific literature, and develops professional communication and teamwork skills.
Biofluid Mechanics
Basic properties of fluids in motion. Lagrangian and Eulerian viewpoints, material derivative, streamlines. Continuity, energy, angular and linear momentum equations in integral and differential forms. Applications in biofluids and biomedical devices; rheology of biological fluids. Introduction to CFD.
Medical Devices, BioMEMS and Microfluidics
Fundamentals and applications of medical devices, BioMEMS and microfluidic technologies across health and biomedical engineering. Covers fabrication methods and analysis techniques, interfacing with biological materials, and analyte detection. Includes individual projects and critical paper reviews in which students master basic concepts in designing and fabricating devices for specific applications.
Synthetic Biology (Interprofessional Projects)
This class asks: can we apply engineering and design principles to life? Can we modify, build, design and use living systems for our own purposes, and should we? Projects are developed within the international iGEM student competition. Run as an Interprofessional Projects course, the class builds teamwork, leadership and project management skills as students work in multidisciplinary teams on technical, ethical, environmental, economic, public policy and legal questions.
Undergraduate and graduate research
Focused research on a topic, experimental or theoretical/computational. See Join the lab for course numbers.
